Renewal: Works About Hope

MJ Cooper

This work is about sincere hope. The dove represents the messenger of the goddess of hope, Elpis, and the blue hyacinths represent sincerity. The words on the dove show the name of Elpis the goddess of hope.

MJ Cooper is an African American artist based in Columbus Ohio. When she caught meningitis as a child it was a traumatic experience that spurred her to create art as a way to cope with the side effects of the illness. When she recovered she used art as a way to express the emotions she had while experiencing the side effects like chronic migraines, and chronic pain. The first paintings created after recovering were acrylic explorations into what the auras she would see during a migraine, and now that she is even better she uses oil paint. She now attends Columbus College of Art and Design.
